A history of the Ozark region during the long Civil War era, from the 1850s to the 1880s, the book follows the region and its people through slavery, the secession crisis, war, and reconstruction. It offers a fresh look at the region’s experience during the most destructive and divisive era in American history.

Among his most notable titles are Hill Folks: A History of Arkansas Ozarkers and Their Region (2002), Arkansas/Arkansaw: How Bear Hunters, Hillbillies, and Good Ol’ Boys Defined a State (2009), and Ghost of the Ozarks: Murder and Memory in the Upland South (2012). Blevins has currently completed two books in a trilogy about the Ozarks, A History of the Ozarks, Volume 1: The Old Ozarks, and the just released A History of the Ozarks Volume 2: The Conflicted Ozarks. Since 2008 Blevins has been the Noel Boyd Professor of Ozarks Studies at Missouri State University in Springfield. He also serves as one of the hosts of Ozark Highlands Radio.
